Personal Social and Health Education

Curriculum Intent

At Allendale Primary School we deliver a PSHE curriculum accessible to all our pupils so that they develop their understanding and knowledge of themselves and their place in community, be it local, national or global.  PSHE is embedded in all that we do in unison with British values to enable our children to become independent, responsible and  healthy, well prepared for their future life and work in modern Britain .

Our PSHE curriculum has been developed with the aim to support the development of the ‘whole child’, by helping them to understand how they are developing personally and socially as well as promoting their social, mental and physical development. Children will be able to develop the ability to tackle the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. PSHE is embedded through everything we do, both within the curriculum and in wider social and enrichment opportunities.

Through discrete PSHE lessons as well as wider cross curricular approach to teaching PSHE, children are taught how to keep themselves safe, physically and emotionally, empathise and respect others viewpoints and take responsibility for themselves and supporting others.

We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities. Our children have a strong pupil voice and are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

Implementation

We take a questioning approach to PSHE and allow the children to explore their own views, opinions and feelings. We provide the safe space for meaningful contributions and debate about issues with all children's views valued but challenged if appropriate. Our PSHE programme is an integral part of our whole school PSHE education provision and is designed to meet the unique needs of all our pupils.

The basis of our school values are rooted in our school rules which enable children to develop respect for self, each other and community. We reinforce PSHE teaching with assembly themes and in our everyday interactions with children, parents and visitors to school. British values of:

  • democracy.
  • rule of law.
  • individual liberty.
  • mutual respect.
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.

are embedded in our school, with pupils having many responsibilities, able to feedback and make suggestions, make their own choices, value each other's contributions and respect different views, opinions, faiths and beliefs.

Along with our broad and balanced curriculum, there are overlaps with other subjects, for example Computing (E-safety), Science (recycling), PE (leading healthy active lives). Therefore, flexibility in the timetable needs to be accounted for as objectives for PSHE education will be met outside of the allocated timetable slot.

Flexibility in the timetable is also important to allow us to respond to local/national/global events that may occur and allow us to responds to any such event in an age appropriate way. The distribution of lessons complements key campaigns throughout the year, such as; Anti-Bulling Week, Black History Month, International Women’s Day and Mental Health Week.

Impact

At Allendale Primary School, we equip our children with the skills to make their own positive choices about their wellbeing, health and relationships and enable them to become rounded citizens in modern Britain. We encourage and actively promote all children to treat everyone with kindness and respect and value our similarities and differences. We nurture their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and supports them to foster good relationships between all in line with the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.

Ultimately, our overarching aims and objectives in supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, enables pupils to develop the ability to collaborate, build upon their emotional security, improve concentration due to a focus on their wellbeing as well as ensuring children are self-reliant with an understanding of self-care and nutrition. We aim for children to move onto the next stage of their education with self-confidence and a high sense of self-worth.
